Tim Burton’s mind must be a very strange place. Remember, it’s where if you commit suicide you have to work for social services in the afterlife (Ref: Beetlejuice). I’m a social worker, so I know what that means! Men with hands made of scissors, Jack Nicholson as Batman’s foil…this is one sick puppy of a director.

So when you hear Mr. Burton is directing a film based on an Eastern European folktale in which one of the heroines-the heroines, mind you—is a corpse….well, family fare is not what comes to mind.

And, although it’s animated, Corpse Bride definitely is not for the younger set, 9 or so and below. These characters look creepy. The title character has a habit of losing her eye and talking to the maggot, Louie, who lives behind it. Skeletons of dogs and people walk and talk about in the “underworld”.

However, like Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, older children will find the animations amusing and fascinating; and parents will be pleased with the messages packaged in the film.

Briefly, “Corpse Bride” is an animated operetta in which Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp), son of fishmongers, is engaged to Victoria, (Emily Watson) the daughter of nobles who are now penniless. Neither know each other but meet accidentally and fall in love. When Victor stumbles over his complicated wedding vows at the rehearsal, he’s humiliated by a stranger at the wedding (Richard E. Grant) and walks in the woods to practice. When he says the vows, he places the ring on a “twig” that turns out to be the finger of Emily (Helena Bonham-Carter), the Corpse Bride, who of course jumps up and happily informs him they are married. (She’s very pretty, by the way, dead or not).

Much of the rest of the movie is taken up by Victor trying to figure out how to get out from the Underworld and by Emily trying to either deny he’s doing that or actively convince him to stay. Gradually, however, Victor finds, to his surprise, that he is falling in love with Emily.

In the end the viewers have heard some good lessons about love, and the main characters, primarily Emily and Victor, have each been willing to sacrifice greatly for the other, out of their love for each other. The importance of wedding vows is a central theme, and Victor especially gives long thought to whom his alliances lie, given what he’s promised, and to whom. And those motivated by greed, such as Richard Grant’s character, mostly come out empty handed.

The comedy is brilliant. In one scene, Emily’s friends in the “pub” do a number quite reminiscent of the Star Wars cantina scene, given the odd-looking musicians. I’m not sure how well the “operetta” mode works with animation; while claymation gives these characters terrific means of expression, they are still limited in their ability to emote, and musical theatre may be best left to human faces. Still, Danny Elfman’s score is beautiful as always.

Leave the wee ones with the other parent next door at “March of the Penguins” or “Wallace and Gromit: Search for the Were-Rabbit”, then huddle with the rest of the kids to see this wonderful film.

Corpse Bride was the first Blu-Ray movie I couldn’t wait to see. I had it on DVD and viewed it many times and as I knew the movie inside and out, along with the issues with displaying the SD DVD on my HD TV, I was excited to be able to make a side by side comparison between the 2 releases.

Corpse Bride on Blu-Ray completely blows the other Blu-Ray movies I own out of the water in terms of authoring. The clarity of the image is astounding and the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray is made overly apparent when you can do a comparison of the 2 directly.

In the Blu-Ray release of CB you can see the texture of the puppets’ faces, something certainly lacking in the DVD. You can also see in the skeleton dance scene some of the metal bits holding the puppets together. On the DVD you can see it but it is difficult or nearly impossible to tell what the shiny piece is.

As far as the movie, it’s a great love story in Tim Burton’s typical twisted fashion.

Definitely worth checking out as a movie but also worthy of checking out what Blu-Ray is capable of.

I thought a lot about this review.

I’m an animation buff, so I can well say that this film received the maximum rank on animation - the amount of details and thought that was put into every movement and shot is admirable, and the result shows. It is certain that the animators did an excellent job - even went down to details such as having the muscles of the dinosaurs vibrate when the foot hits the floor. Sometimes I actually forgot that this was an animation movie, and mistook it for a National Geographic feature.

The story, on the other hand, is rather disappointing. It seems like the development process stopped after the story became reasonable. The characters are only skin-deep, and it is frustrating for someone who had already seen a couple of movies before that this one brings nothing new to the screen. It’s sad to notice so many ‘deja vu’s while watching, seeing so many thing that you have already seen before, especially that the main character - Aladar - is an orphan dinosaur raised by monkeys, carries a close resemblance to Disney’s previous feature, Tarzan.

Two thumbs up for the music - it really hits the spot. The composer captured every moment so naturally that it fits like a glove. Nothing I say can convey the impression, so you might as well see it for yourself.

All in all, an amazing animation feature with a weak plot. This film - in itself - receives 4 stars from me, although if I had calculated my impression on the Collector’s edition, I would have definitely lowered it to 3. It simply wasn’t worth the extra money I added. The second DVD contains very little material, and I really expected more from a highly documented production such as this one to include more material. People purchase this item to get more information about the animation process, and I really feel like I wanted more. I really think that I should have bought the regular edition and saved some cash.

I am not sure what critics were expecting when they shot this movie down. It is a fun and exciting adventure for children and adults alike. It may be a little too scary for children under 6, so be warned. Let’s get one thing straight, folks. Dinosaur is a movie for CHILDREN. So, don’t go in expecting to see the second coming of Jurassic Park. The movie does offer brilliant CGI special effects and breathtaking scenery. I like the story for kids because it stresses teamwork and the value of every individual. The lead character, an Iguanadon named Aladar, is very likeable and I found myself rooting for him time and again. Was the movie expensive? Yes. Is it one of Disney’s best ever? No. BUT, it is fun and exciting. There are SO many movies out there for adults. This one is a winner for kids. Don’t cheat your kids out of enjoying it because they will.

One point I would make about this movie is that it seemed to make more sense and enjoyable after seeing ‘Ocean’s Twelve’. I think this is because a person can see patterns or themes develop such as the connection of winning back the heart of a lost love. This movie is enjoyable and pretty lite.

This movie is nothing more than an excuse for George and Brad to wear snappy suits and exchange equally snappy dialogue (I love the bit about rehearsing a speech). If you don’t like these guys, don’t bother, but if you even like them a little bit, you owe it to yourself to buy this. It is well worth it.

Finally there’s Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the star Walter Lantz inherited from an earlier (1927-28) Walt Disney/Ub Iwerks regime at Universal. Disney reacquired some rights to Oswald in 2006; last year saw a selection released in their Walt Disney Treasures line. But Universal retained rights to its own Oswald material, and Woody Vol. 2 brings us another small, tempting quintet.

The inventive, vital black and white classics are a fascinatingly different viewing experience from anything else on this box, as wannabe hero Oswald is smacked by Tex Avery’s earliest gags. A long-lost color Oswald featuring girlfriend Fanny, SPRINGTIME SERENADE, is here too.

With new Oswald dolls and merchandise now available in stores, one can only hope Universal will tie in by taking the next step — to release a multi-volume disc set on the Woody model, but with Oswald as the main character. From CHILLY CON CARMEN’s pre-Betty Boop hooch dance to the cyborg T-Rex of STONE AGE, from the impossible ocean tricks of PERMANENT WAVE to Oswald’s surrealist, pre-Wackyland adventures on MARS, there are dozens of these classics crying for a release.

Throw in a few pre-Lantz Oswalds as extras, and we’re so there.

This set will have 45 Woody Woodpecker Cartoons spanning from 1952-1958. The trouble is that director Paul J. Smith (boo) was only interested in bringing the cartoons in under budget, creativity was not an issue for him. He started taking over Woody in 1955 and the cartoons started to became mediocre.

The GOOD NEWS is that there will also be non-Smith Woodys and 30 Walter Lantz non-Woody cartoons produced from 1930-1960 in this set, and these classics will be well worth getting this for! With DVDs you can just skip over the Paul J. Smith clunkers and cue the menu to these.

After watching the B&W cartoons on disc 1, I want to add that I am surprised at how well the Lantz studio imitaded other studios.

Take “SHE DONE HIM RIGHT”, if you did not see the production credits you would swear that you were watching a 1933 Max Fleischer Betty Boop cartoon.

“A HAUNTING WE WILL GO” may first remind you of a Disney cartoon, but with the racist “Lil’ Eightball” starring character it reminds me more of the MGM/Harmon-Ising “BOSKO IN A HAUNTED HOUSE” cartoon.

The real interesting surprise is the last Oswald presented on this disc, “THE PUPPET SHOW”. This strangely combines live puppets with an Animated Oswald as the puppeteer. At first I thought he was added to an existing puppet short, but as the film goes on there is an animated dream sequence of the puppets. Was Universal trying to savce an aborted puppet film project? Was the use of live action puppets a cost-saving device to get the years productions back on budget? Either way, it makes for a nice departure from the standard Lantz cartoons of that time.

“FAIR TODAY” is a weak Tex Avery inspired cartoon, “JOLLY LITTLE ELVES” reminds you of some Leon Slessinger/Warner Brothers cartoons & “CANDY LAND” could be from any studio of that time.

It appears that Lantz did not get a real style of his own until Woody Woodpecker & Andy Panda came on the scene.

It would be hard for me to consider buying a volume 3, but this set is still well worth getting!

Credit The Benchwarmers for achieving the impossible: It makes the 2005 remake of The Bad News Bears look like a masterpiece. They’re essentially the same film, with the same lowbrow PG-13 humor (mostly involving bodily functions, broad slapstick, little people, nerds, geeks, and nose-picking), but this baseball comedy earns a few brownie points for its heart-warming message about including non-athletic kids (i.e. “benchwarmers”) in Little Leagu baseball, if only to boost their confidence and give them a moment of ball-field glory. It’s a pleasant sentiment intended to encourage under-achievers to feel good about themselves, and that makes this loose-and-goofy vehicle for Rob Schneider, David Spade, and Napoleon Dynamite’s Jon Heder an easygoing time-killer. Parents with good taste should be warned that this movie has no taste at all (it’s hopelessly mired in the swamp of fart jokes and juvenile sight-gags), and is there really a need for mild profanity in a movie like this? That said, there are a few laughs in the efforts of Schneider and his ultra-nerdy pals as they form a team of rejects and go to bat against an enemy squad of current and former school-bullies, led by former late-night talk-show host Craig Kilborn. In addition to Schneider and Spade, Saturday Night Live alumni Jon Lovitz and Tim Meadows show up for an easy paycheck, and director Dennis Dugan handles the dumb-and-dumber shtick as if he were on vacation, sipping margaritas and shamelessly going for the easy laughs. In The Postman Always Rings Twice Jack Nicholson teamed up again with his Five Easy Pieces and King of Marvin Gardens director Bob Rafelson for this 1981 version of James M. Cain’s hardboiled novel of lust and murder. This version takes a much grittier (and sexually explicit) approach to the material than the slick 1946 MGM version starring John Garfield and Lana Turner. Nicholson plays Frank Chambers, a drifter who happens upon a roadside diner run by Cora Papadakis (Jessica Lange) and her swarthy Greek husband, Nick (John Colicos). Sparks fly, and before you can say l’amour fou, Frank and Cora are making the beast with two backs on the kitchen table. One thing leads to another and they conspire to murder Nick. The movie is still a little too cold and distant to fully convey a hot-blooded passion that leads to murder, but it is a strangely haunting and disturbing film nevertheless. The screenplay is by David Mamet, the photography is by the great Sven Nykvist (Ingmar Bergman’s cinematographer), and watch for Anjelica Huston in a supporting role. –Jim Emerson

Much like Richard Adams’s wonderful novel, this animated tale of wandering rabbits is not meant for small children. It is, however, rich storytelling, populated with very real individuals inhabiting a very real world. The animation is problematic, sometimes appearing out of proportion or just subpar; but it seems to stem from an attempt at realism, something distinguishing the film’s characters from previous, cutesy, animated animals. A band of rabbits illegally leave their warren after a prophecy of doom from a runt named Fiver (Richard Briers). In search of a place safe from humans and predators, they face all kinds of dangers, including a warren that has made a sick bargain with humankind, and a warren that is basically a fascist state. Allegories aside, Down is engaging and satisfying, and pulls off the same amazing trick that the novel did–you’ll forget that this is a story about rabbits. –Keith Simanton
